I don’t often write directly about my children, but I’m writing today about a brave challenge my son has set himself, a challenge to try and raise money for the charity Cancer Research UK. Late last summer he started a new sport, something I’d never heard of before, Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He’s really enjoyed it and he’s worked and trained hard to literally get to grips with it, but it’s tough and it’s often painful.
He has decided, even though he has only fairly recently started fighting, to enter a charity event, a mixed martial arts event. Now I have to say until he decided to enter, I had no idea what it was apart from two people fighting in a cage where it seems just about anything goes. To say I was taken aback at his decision is an understatement. However, he explained that it was to raise money for the charity Cancer Research UK. This is such a worthy cause and I don’t need to tell you about the people I known, and have known who have fought and are fighting a different sort of battle, a battle with cancer – and no doubt you know plenty too.
This is what I wrote on my facebook page:
My son Rory is undertaking a massive challenge in order to try and raise money for Cancer Research UK He has entered an MMA – Mixed Martial Arts event, which I understand is a cage fight (gulp) hoping to be sponsored in order to make a big donation to this more than worthy cause. Most of us have people dear to us who have had to fight – to fight cancer, and I would be so grateful if you could donate whatever you can to try and help win this battle. Rory is doing his part – please, please, please help him to raise money for Cancer Research UK
I have never done this before, but I’m asking if you could think about donating, even a small amount to support my son in his efforts to raise money.
Here are details of the charity:
…and here are the details of the event:
and here are the details of how you can help my son raise money
Thank you so much for any support.
