It was quiz night tonight at the Dolphin; husband was rocking with his band but die to a knee problem I had to deliver him to rehearsal before delivering me to the pub. I arrived a little early but had a quick catch up chat with our actorly friends from the Bleadon Players, our local and very good am-dram group, had a chat with Ewan at the bar who only gave me 5 points for the way I used my phone to pay for a drink, then sat down next to one of the 2 T’s – the one who’s been on hols. I had a nice chat with him and Mrs T about their holiday and then the rest of the team, the ice-creams and daughter arrived.
I was only able to join in one round as I had to get back to pick up the drummer from his rehearsal. There were some interesting questions…
Q: Dougal Haston and Doug Scot were the first Britons to climb which mountain?
I answered K2; I remember the excitement about them doing it, but unfortunately the excitement was because they were the first Brits to climb Everest! Of course. Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Tibet) were the first men ever to conquer the world’s highest peak!
Q: what year were Sean Bean and Sheena Easton born?
We tried to think how old they might be, how old they were when we first remembered them, and any other clue… I guessed 1963 – in fact it was 1959.
Q: which is the only one of the seven wonders of the modern world in the UK
We did a lot of head scratching – what was meant by modern? What could be described as a wonder of the world here? I guessed The Angel of the North; Mr Ice-Cream guessed Stonehenge – I argued that it was constructed between 3000 and 2000 BC so it could hardly be described as ‘modern’ since it was older than the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria; only the Great Pyramid of Giza were possibly older. So what abut modern wonders/? Hmm, a lot of thought, but the quiz moved on.
So what was the answer? What are the wonders of the modern world? According to Wikipedia they are The Great Wall China – 700 BC , Petra – 5th century BC, Christ the Redeemer 1931, Machu Picchu 1450 AD, Chichen Itza – from 600 AD, The Colosseum of Rome 80AD, the Taj Mahal 1643 AD…
The pub quiz answer was Stonehenge… OK, so it’s a pub quiz, we can’t really quibble!! We had a great night and that’s all that matters!
