My featured image is of my mum, Monica, probably when she was in her late twenties, on a beach somewhere – probably Norfolk, and no doubt taken by my Dad. Of course I am posting it because today is Mother’s Day, and I was very lucky to have her as my Mum. Also very lucky, I am now a mum and I had a splendid day out with my daughter.
She picked me up from home and drove us to Clarence Park, a park not far away, where we had a very splendid picnic! Normally we would have gone to a café for this sort of celebration, usually to have a cream tea, and for preference to our favourite café in the small village of Locking. This splendid establishment wasn’t open today, but guess what – they have cream teas in a box! Daughter had gone over and collected our box and with great excitement we opened it on our picnic blanket in Clarence Park. So what did it contain? Well –
All the cakes, scones and sausage rolls were homemade, the sandwiches were filled to bursting, the coleslaw which is honestly the best I’ve ever tasted is also homemade, it was just the most delightful picnic you could imagine. I think Daughter must have ordered the weather too as the sun poured down and there was just the slightest breeze to keep us comfy. Clarence Park is a delightful small park in Weston-super-Mare, which has attractive flower beds, old and mature trees, many sufficiently climbable for small children, and a popular little café from where we obtained a cup of tea for me and a can of soft drink for Daughter.
Picnic consumed, we sat for a while enjoying the sun and then packed up and got back in the car to drive to Apex Park in Burnham-on-Sea, a twenty minute drive away. We walked through the park and out to the banks of the River Brue which flows into the Bristol Channel. When we reached the seafront, the wind was rather sharp, so we headed back to the car, and then returned Weston. We had a couple of things to do in Weston and then we had a coffee just to finish off our day out! The plan had been to have all met later for a meal out, but our intended venue was fully booked – and in fact I was rather glad as I was still extremely full from the wonderful picnic!
What a great day, and now I’m here, writing this, and looking up at a photo of my mum in a frame on the bookcase. Here is a picture of Mum and her mum, my grandma Ida.
