Tomorrow is Tuesday, and tomorrow night it will be quite like old times. When we first moved down here, to Somerset from Lancashire, our pub was the Dolphin. On Tuesday night we’d go to quiz night in the Dolphin and at first the landlord, the estimable Mark shouted the questions and gave us the answers. It was through the quiz that we became friends with a couple we’d previously known as ‘the Boltons’ (their home town) who became really close friends In fact the two husbands went on to become founding members of the local shanty group, and are now stalwarts of the Weston Ukulele Players.
Back to quizzing, and the Dolphin quiz; Mark found the perfect person to take over running the quiz, our beloved Scott. The quiz changed under his offices, it became a bingo quiz – an answer sheet divided into 5×5 spaces to write the answers, like a bingo card. When the answers were given, if you had a straight line of five correct, you shouted ‘Dolphin‘. The first all correct shout won a prize, and there was another prize for the highest correct score. With Scott as quiz-lord, it became a great and fun evening, whether we lost or won! it couldn’t continue through lockdown of course, but as soon as we were released and free to socialise again, our first thoughts were that we would be back quizzing!! All things change, and several years later, our Tuesday nights changed when the Dolphin had new tenants and it became more of a bar/restaurant. Sadly quizzing wasn’t part of their business plans., and so that was that.
Since then, no more weekly quizzes for us – but hurrah! We will be joining our old team mates tomorrow for a quiz at another pub. The excellent Coach House in Locking, the next village along from us. is hosting a quiz night. It won’t be a bingo quiz, but it will be fun and we’ll be in each other’s company again. No doubt we will raise a glass to our dear Scott, and hope we’ll be successful,, and – as the current jargon has it “do him proud”!
I have no images of quiz sheets, quiz nights or teams, so here are some ice-creams as a nod to the Boltons who founded the best ice-cream shop in Weston, PJ’s Ice Cream Parlour.
