Walking back from the pub on a sunny afternoon…

OK, actually I had just popped into The Dolphin to see Nicky the landlady, but walking the couple of hundred yards home it was such a glorious afternoon that I had to whip out my camera. We live in the lovely village of Uphill, not named because it is near a very steep hill with a ruined church and windmill tower on the top, but because of the river or ‘pill’ nearby. Apparently someone called Oppa or Uppa lived there in the so called Dark Ages; he had a wharf for trading ships from Wales, Cornwall and Ireland and it was known as Uppa’s Pill… hence Uphill.

Just about to go over the rhyne (pronounced ‘reen’ it is a local name for a little stream) The water was full of fish, even on such a hot sunny day they were swimming around facing upstream.
There used to be shops along here, bakers on the left, sweet shop on the right.
There used to be a smithy here
Looking back towards the hill, what a shocking state the road is in!
Glancing over my shoulder…
This is always such a lovely front garden on Westfield Drive, but it looks especially pretty in the sunshine
