The Questions

Do you prefer rhyming or non-rhyming poetry?

I love a lot of different and varied poetry, rhyming and non-rhyming, but if I think about it, the modern poets I like do not rhyme: Martín Espada, Patrick MacDonogh, Jon Loomis, Kim Addonizio, Brigit Pegeen Kelly…

2- What’s your favorite Shakespeare Play?

Macbeth… it translates into the modern world so well, power, ambition, betrayal, love… it has everything! Talk about heroes and villains!

3- Who is your favourite author?

John le Carré – and favourite book ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ – I have read it countless times!

4- Name three people who you greatly admire.

Rosa Parks, my great grandmother Lois Walford née Penney, Oscar Wilde. Rosa Parks because she was just an ordinary person who exhibited such huge courage and strength to combat the outrageous systemic racism which she met every day; Lois Walford who went against her family and Victorian convention to live with the Jewish man she loved, bear him five illigitimate children, and support them when her beloved ‘husband’ died just before his 50th birthday when the children were all so young; Oscar Wilde for his wit and courage and intellect and passion.

People living today who I admire are Barack Obama, David Weir (paralympic athlete) my cousin Jackie

5- What’s your favourite album ever?

The Mavericks… but which album? A tough choice, all those fantastic songs, ‘Neon Blue’, ‘O What a Thrill’… so many to choose from. Maybe ‘The Mavericks’, their last album before they split up; they have now reunited and a new album is on the way!
