John Wyndham

John Wyndham is another re-read author on my list….

I remembered him yesterday when I was posting about lichen.

He’s most famous for ‘The Day of the Triffids’ which spawned a host of other books and films.

Another of his books which was made into at least one film, ‘The Village of the Damned’ and again must have inspired so many other writers and film-makers is ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’

I read them all when I was a child, read and re-read them!

John Wyndham was born with the magnificent name of John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris in 1906; tragically he died young in 1969 (well, youngish) As well as his famous novels he wrote many short stories which were published in collections such as ‘The Seeds of Time’.

He was a science fiction writer, but his novels were full of ordinary and believable people; his ideas and visions of a future have been a great influence…. I must re-read him!

Which is your favourite novel of his? I’m going to reread them because apart from the Triffids and Cuckoos, they all have become a little muddled.Which was the one which starts on a farm and there is a very large cart horse?

it would be a toss-up between The Day of the Triffids, Cuckoos, and The Kraken Wakes. The last one is quite relevant today, with global sea levels rising. The cart horse doesn’t ring a bell, though.
