Preparing a midwinter surprise

I did something this afternoon which takes me back to my childhood (yet again!)

We went to a garden centre this afternoon and I saw some hyacinth bulbs. I was inspired tobuy a couple, one for each of my children as my mum Monica always did for me and my sister, Andy.

There were some little plastic bags all scrumpled up to pop them into,

Oh dear, not a plastic bag but a plastic glove!
Just beginning to sprout

At home I filled the special glasses with water,as Monica used to and put the bulbs into the bowls.

One will have a white flower, the other will be blue

They have to be kept in the dark, to be forced for Christmas, so…

… under the stairs if I can find room among the jumble! This is where we keep herbs and spices and our stores… if we can find them!

I’ll have a look when I’m out and about. I’m afraid I have black fingers though – I’m a whizz with animals and kids and totally deadly with plants – you have to see it to believe it.

This only involves water… get the boy to place hyacinths in the glasses so you won’t come into contact with them at all, consign to a dark place and wait…
