Luigi

My first ever car was an Austin A35, which is the first car we had as a family. Our first family car was a dark bottle green and was nick-named ‘Aussie’ by us children  Aussie’s finest hour was driving up to Sheffield from Cambridge in the bitter winter of 1962-3; the car has no heating… no heating at all. Andy and I were jammed in the back with the presents we were taking to our Elsden cousins in Sheffield and the snow came down, and down, and down. There were no motorways in those days and I guess we crawled up the A1, the great North Road, originally Ermine Street, a Roman road connecting London and York. We arrived after a journey of eight hours… good little Aussie!

My first A35 was pale blue and I had her for several years before making a disastrous purchase of a Japanese car of some sort.

Now we have a new old car on the drive, my daughter’s first car, called Luigi because of his registration. he’ a fine little car and when our daughter is away we drive him too… isn’t it strange how we humanise our vehicles?!

Luigi doesn’t look very old to me. Pity you didn’t have a pic of the A35s to add. Lofty, my daily ride (and ‘hotel’ on the night a week when I work away from home), pictured in the gravatar, is 41 this year – not very old at all. Congratulations on producing such a beautiful daughter – was it for Luigi she had such a winning smile?
