Sporting hero

I’ve just watched the Great British Bake-Off, in aid of sports relief; the celebrity presenter was Omid Djalili, the boxer and the guests were Victoria Pendleton, Michael Ball, Emma Freud and Jamelia. As usual the judges were Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood… it was the most hilarious programme and I hope they raised a lot of money, Nicola Adams the boxer was in South Africa showing how the funds are used to help young people.

Tonight apart from making a tray-bake, and doughnuts, the contestants had to make a cake as a tribute to their sporting hero and decorated accordingly. Emma did the girl from the 1970’s tennis poster, Victoria did Sir Chris Hoy and Jamelia did the Jamaican Olympic relay team who won at the 2012 Olympics. Michael Ball made a tribute to Shirley Crabtree the wrestler, otherwise known as Big Daddy, but his little figure of the wrestler looked more like Mr Blobby! it was a very funny episode, I laughed and laughed!

Afterwards I wondered who I would have chosen as a my sporting hero, and what sort of cake I would have made? my favourite flavour combination at the moment is almond and cardamom with a little hint of vanilla… but who would I choose as a hero, and what would my cake be like? My first sporting hero was a Scottish swimmer Bobby McGregor… so I could do a swimming pool cake with a little figure… but blue icing never looks very attractive, I don’t think. I then was a great admirer of the snooker player Alex Higgins, so a cake shaped like a snooker table wouldn’t be too tricky. Then I thought Rory Underwood the rugby player was just amazing… so rugby pitch? Rugby ball? A cake in the shape of Rory? My next sporting hero was Hansie Cronje, but sadly he turned out not to be such a hero, more of a villain… so maybe I would leave him off my list. However when I think about it, my dad was a great sportsman, he loved golf, and rowing and fishing… so maybe I would do a cake in the shape of a giant fish that my dad might have caught… as a tribute to him!
