I was talking to a friend of mine at the YMCA who works for the forestry department about lichens the other day after reading your comments about them. He said they have an affinity for mercury, out of the air or water etc. and can be poisonous if injested by humans. As much as you seem to like them please don’t put them in your soup as I love your blog and would sure miss you.
