What’s the story

I’ve changed the details slightly but here is a story in the making.

A man was browsing the racks of cds, dvds and vinyls in a large store; he was not unusual in any way, quite normally dressed, seemingly conventional. He did not seem to be looking for anything in particular, almost as if he was killing time or certainly letting time pass. he looked up quite suddenly, purposefully and was looking at a woman who worked in the store and was answering the questions of another customer. She too was quite ordinary, wearing the usual polo shirt with the name of the store on the lapel. The man watched her and then went back to looking through the cds; however, it might seem that he was aware of her now, and although he didn’t move nearer to her, he did glance in her direction from time to time, but quick, almost surreptitious glances. He turned and went to the far end of the store and began to look through a selection of dvds of TV shows. After a few minutes, with a dvd in his hand he headed down to the desk at the front of the store to pay. He came to the end of a row of box set dvds and glancing sideways he noticed the woman kneeling on the floor arranging some new stock. She leant to one side and an inch of her back was revealed as he shirt pulled slightly. The man strode to the desk, paid for the dvd in his hand and then left the shop swiftly, without a backward glance.

Did the man know the woman? Did she know him? Did she realise he was looking at her… actually, no, she didn’t. Why was he looking at her? He had no particular expression on his face, so he wasn’t angry, or upset, or longing, and had obvious emotion or feeling for her… so what was the story? Was she related to him without her knowing? Did she remind him of someone else? Was there something in her face or voice or pose that inspired him to go away and paint her or write about her or write a song about her? What’s the story/

The Beatles wrote about Rita the Meter Maid and Ellenore Rigby and I expect it was just someone they observed and just filled in the blanks themselves. We are all more than we think we are, we are also what others think we are. But we are just passing through.

She looked like someone he knew. It wasn’t anyone he had met in this life yet dejavou has a nasty habit of playing games on a person. Perhaps she was identical to the woman that he had met a life time ago, maybe before he had go off to die in the first world war. Someting about the scar on her lower back put him on edge.

He ran across the road and jumped into the black landrover with the blacked out widows. As he sat back and took a deep breath, his companion turned to him.
    “Is she the one?”
    “I’m not sure.”
“Did you feel anything from her?”
“I don’t know, it could be too early to know.”
“When will you know?” The companion asked knocking on the roof to let the driver move on.
“If she is the one I suspect then we will have to wait till the next full moon.”
“Won’t that be dangerous for you?”
“It will be dangerous for all of us if I don’t find out.” He took off his coat and threw it over the back of the seat in front. He looked at the dvd and cursed.
    “What’s wrong?”
“I got the wrong disk, I have this one already!”

She watched him leaving the shop and was even more sure now that there was something about him, some feeling she had. The mark on her back started to prickle. How she wish her grandmother was still alive to answer her questions, but soon would be the Sam Hain and she hoped that she would get her answer.
