On the beach

I was walking home along the beach, and it was a warm still afternoon and voices carried. I couldn’t help but hear some strange bits of conversation… Everyone speaking was talking really loudly, as if they thought they were alone with their friends.

“… so he went and got one from the chemist, just over the counter…” “He got it over the counter?” “Yes, and he strapped it round his waist and ever since…”

“… is a lovely name, I wonder where it comes from?” Affectionate chuckle.

“… so it’s like, oh my God! and I said… well, I thought it was a cheek and I said you can put it under the stairs but don’t make a mess on the carpet, and he goes, like, yeah…”

“S**t! it’s a golf ball! How the hell…” (we are next to a golf course)

“Daddy said go and get a football and you’ve got a basket ball!” “Well, we can…”

“… and then once they were married…” “What? No! No way!”
