I had very mixed feelings about seeing this handsome and proud animal sitting staring back at the visitors in the zoo. He is a mature orang utan from Borneo. The zoo does wonderful work by captive breeding, and helping to protect endangered species, but somehow the dignity of the animal seems compromised.

I have mixed feelings about this subject too Lois. You might like this lovely blog on orangutan conservation in Borneo http://thebiotrotter.com/on-borneo/blog-posts/ – one of the first blogs I came across on WordPress 🙂

The battle to save the orang-utan in the wild is not yet over. There are plenty of campaigns that call for public help in raising funds to preserve their habitat, like this one last year: http://alastairsavage.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/save-the-orang-utan-yes-we-can/
There’s no reason to feel sorry when we can take action now that future generations cannot.

You’re right, but the issues are so complex, aren’t they? I have mixed feelings about zoos completely… although I can’t exactly explain why!
Thanks for the link!

Me too. I am not fond of keeping animals in captivity. However, a lot depends on the environment in which they are kept, and to that extent, safari parks seem like a better idea to me. This poor old orang-utan seems to miss Borneo a lot. The home counties just doesn’t do it for him…
