Apparently, so media reports tell us, a glass of wine a day is good for people over sixty… What about people under sixty? What about people who are fifty-nine and fifty-one weeks?
According to a report in American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias, moderate consumption of alcohol, drinking between one and two glasses a day can ‘preserve’ that part of your brain which is responsible for memory and cognition. They came to this conclusion after the Universities of Texas, Kentucky and Maryland conducted experiments with over 600 people. I don’t think the findings are advocating that as soon as anyone hits sixty they should hit the bottle, but it’s interesting that there is another side to alcohol consumption. Drinking too much can do terrible things to people, to their family and to their friends. It can damage health, it can cause poverty, it can make people violent and irresponsible… But moderation, moderation in most things is good!
My grandma always used to say ‘a little of what you fancy does you good’. Who am I to argue with my grandma?
Bearing this in mind, I was interested to find out that this year has been a great year for the English wine industry : English wine: why 2014 might be a year to remember: after a disappointing 2013, a bumper harvest of healthy, rot-free grapes this year could help lead our nascent wine industry on to further glories…

I’ll drink to that!!!
