Time for porridge

It’s that porridge time of year; whether you make it with milk or water, add sugar/syrup/honey/chocolate sprinkles or salt. It warms you up, it cheers you up and it fills you up.

I guess many people have childhood memories of porridge… I remember my mum blowing on it and stirring it quickly.. perhaps we were late for school, maybe I had dawdled getting dressed, but she would whiz it around trying to cool it down. We used to have brown sugar at home, and sometimes it would be a bit lumpy, I guess the flat was a bit on the chilly side so the sugar maybe got damp. I wouldn’t stir my porridge very much then, because the lumps would sit and dissolve and when I found them unexpected they would be all runny and gooey… this doesn’t appeal to me now!

There is a great debate about sugar vs salt… I was brought up with sugar, but as I’ve grown older my taste has changed, and I had less and less sugar until I had none at all… and now a sprinkle of salt is just the thing!

Down in the southern United States when you order breakfast they give you grits on the plate whether you ordered them or not. After a while I got to like them with lots of salt and pepper. I guess it’s there version of porridge and you better eat them.

I think they are boiled cornmeal or cream of wheat.Pretty bland taste and just made to fill you up. Your husband would love the cornedbeef hash served with a fried egg on top with biscuits and sausage gravy. That used to be my favorite. Yum! Could tell you about breakfast in Toledo. Thats a riot.

I went for breakfast in Toledo Ohio and they had a carousel of steam trays going about with different food items on them and you stood there while all this deliciouse food kept coming your way and helped yourself. Everything looked so good I just kept putting a bit of everything on my plate until a voice said ( are you going to eat all that ) I looked down and my plate was crammed. The sign above the carousel said don’t let your eyes be bigger than your appetite. I felt a real greedy fool.

I had to eat it all as i felt everyone was watching me. It’s easy to see why obesity is a big problem in the states because of the all you can eat buffets. Not me tho. Lean and mean!
