Short term memory

Although we are heading towards spring, it is very definitely still winter. There are snowdrops in the little pasture known as the Donkey Field as you enter the village… but it is less than 5° and it is jolly cold.. it’s winter! It’s not just the temperature, or the  long hours of darkness – yes, the days are getting longer, the sun is setting later, but it’s the greyness, the quality of the light and the colour of the sky.

Looking through my photos I came across a picture I took in the summer… a fairground ride on the Beach Lawns. It wasn’t just the fact that people are  out in the open enjoying themselves in the sunshine, it is the quality of the sky… the exact shade of blue which tells you that, yes, it’s summer!

The one sure thing about the weather in our town is that the week the carnival comes to town it rains every day. It never ever fails. Poor carnies.P.S. When I was a kid I always wanted to run off with the carnival. Still do!

Our carnival is in November and it’s nearly always horrible, always cold but often raining too, and the wind straight off the sea! Our carnival is all round Guy Fawkes night… You must remember that!

Used to push the pram with Guy in it from door to door to collect money for fireworks. Great fun for kids burning someone in effigy. Probably politically incorrect today. Do they still do it?

I don’t think they do – there are still bonfires and fireworks but not so many ‘Guys’. Thee are a lot of community displays. Did you have a little song you used to sing when you went round with your Guy? In Oldham they had a special little song.

Don’t remember any little song only the pretty little girls. Went to the tower of London and saw the rack that Guy was stretched on. The beefeater said that when Guy was put on the rack he was five feeet six and wouldn’t tell us the names of his co-conspirators. When we were finished with him he was six feet six and told us all we wanred to know. Beats a lie detector all to hell I’d say!
