Ne’er cast a clout till May is out

Some people understand this saying to mean don’t take off any coats or jackets until the month of May has finished, others think it is may blossom on hawthorn trees, may blossom by the way smells wonderful! I know we are only a few days into May but it’s not been a very warm start for us here in the south-west of England. A clout by the way is a cloth, or in this case clothing. It’s a very old saying, nearly three hundred years old in fact.

I usually start wearing sandals after Easter… I’ve worn them once, and I’m glad I haven’t been wearing them today, it is pouring down with rain. last may, 2014, was the hottest month ever for the earth… apparently. The average temperature was 15.54°C which  was the warmest since records began in 1880; this was according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Uk had the third highest May temperature last year after Latvia and Norway, and then Denmark, and then us. The article I was reading warns that we are due an exceptional hot weather event this year 2015, because of El Niño.

The record earth temperature in May last year was set in the 351st consecutive month of higher than average temperatures… which strikes me as worrying.
