I’m not sure I am going to try this 1937 recipe for what I guess would be a sort of salad cream – my husband might like it, but I don’t really think I would.
If anyone wants to try this recipe from the Spry ‘What shall I cook today?’ book, here it is:
- 1 egg
- 1 large tsp flour
- ½ tsp sugar
- ½ tsp mustard
- ½tsp salt
- ½ gill milk
- ½ gill vinegar
- ½ gill water
- 1 oz Spry (vegetable fat)
- mix the flour, sugar, mustards, salt and egg to a smooth paste
- add the other liquids and heat using a bain marie, double saucepan or basin over boiling water (don’t let the basin touch the water)
- stir until thick and add the Spry
- stir occasionally until cold
- put in a jar and store
