Who would have thought it? I first subliminally became aware of The Drifters and The Isley Brothers and other similar bands when I arrived in Weston-super-Mare, strangely. Our family had moved from Cambridge and my sister and I started at a new school, which seemed unbelievably old-fashioned. Old-fashioned, but in the sixth form common room at lunch time people played their favourite LPs (yes, LPs) and there was a group of girls who unfortunately I never ‘got in with’. They played music like I had never heard before, including the Isleys and the Drifters,
When I moved on to do my degree at Manchester Poly, my new friends and I went to discos where this was the music which was played… The Isleys, the Four Tops, the Supremes, the Drifters…
Here is a whole new take on an old favourite –

In my school, we had a record player and played LPs in the 6th form common room. West Coast rock mostly as I remember

So did we! I joined a new 6th form and didn’t really know anyone – they were playing Tamla and Soul but I drifted into bands like the Incredible String Band

Are they still going? They were popular in our sixth form too but I was into rock by then, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd

I’m not sure! I moved onto Jefferson – and then I got into the club scene in Manchester and it was back to Tamla and Soul!
