A writing mood-board

I’d never heard of mood boards before – am I totally out of the loop? Apparently having been around for a long while, they were taken up more widely in the 2000’s and culminated in Pinterest… which I confess I still don’t quite understand. A writing friend finds Pinterest absolutely invaluable.  maybe I should explore it with more determination. Mood boards, the website artsy.net describes them as – They were branded as a lifestyle tool for everyone from college-bound teens planning out their dorm rooms to foodies and mommy bloggers. Pinterest’s 2010 arrival made mood-boarding as easy as clicking on any image or inspirational nugget of the internet to “pin it” onto a virtual “board.”

However, mood-boards have been around for decades, and probably existed before they were called mood boards. According to Wikipedia: they are  a type of collage consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition. It can be based upon a set topic or can be any material chosen at random. A mood board can be used to convey a general idea or feel about a particular topic. They may be physical or digital, and can be effective presentation tools…  which sounds like a good idea, and something I have tried with my writing groups in a different way, using a tray of random items:

It’s been a while since I used this idea – I might try it next time with my writing groups; meanwhile this afternoon we’re thinking of characters, and editing!

My image by the way might be part of a mood board… who is this family, and what is their secret? They’re a little blurred, a little fuzzy, maybe that’s indicative of their mystery… or maybe they’re from another world…
