Makowiec – poppy seed and apple cake

We all loved the delicious poppy cake Barbara made for us at the English conversation class party; it was nutty and apple-y and  mmmm, yummy! Barbara has sent me the recipe, I had to change a couple of words and I haven’t yet made the cake, but a friend gave me some apples, and I have to buy some poppy seeds… then I’ll certainly be making it!

“Makowiec”

You need

  •  200 g. poppy seeds
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 125 g. melted margarine
  • 8 spoonfuls semolina (I guess they will be 15ml spoons)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 500 g. grated apples.

1. boil the poppy seeds, then drain through a sieve and chop finely
2. Preheat the oven to 200 C. Grease the cake tin.
3. Whip eggs with sugar. Gradually add the ground poppy seeds mixing all the time.
4. Add margarine, semolina and powder, mix well. (I think I would beat the margarine first)
5. Finally, add grated apples. Mix well. Transfer to prepared pan.
6. Bake for 40-50 minutes.

BON APETIT

I can’t wait to try this myself! First I need to get some poppy seeds!
