I wrote the other day about how a poem by Wordsworth is always triggered in my mind when ever there is heavy rain – and even when I think about heavy rain when I’m writing about it, the words still come…
There was a roaring in the wind all night;
The rain came heavily and fell in floods…
It’s from Resolution and Independence, or The Leech Gatherer, and it a favourite poem, as well as very evocative.
Today the rain isn’t coming down heavily, and definitely not falling in floods, however it is raining pretty consistently, and it’s nasty and very wet out there. This sort of dreary, miserable rain, brings other words unbidden to my mind, this time, a song, by Buddy Holly. It was recorded in 1958, released in 1959, and my sister and I, when we were very young, must have heard it, and we would always sing it on car journeys when it was raining – even though the lyric starts ‘The sun is out, the sky is blue, there’s not a cloud to spoil the view‘. It was written, lyric and melody by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. I’d never heard of them but they wrote some very famous songs, and favourite songs of min, including ‘Love Hurts’.
