I have yet to publish the last chapter of the Colgates in Bletchingley, but on a recent visit there I found Henry and Charlotte Colgate, the first of the family to live in the pretty little village. Henry came from Kent where his family had lived for generations over hundreds of years. Charlotte came from Horley and was a Jeal before she married and I have been less successful in finding out anything about her.

Visiting these graves has not only been interesting, and sometimes moving, it has set me thinking. Both my parents and my grandparents were cremated; it was not a family thing to have a gravestone so there is no memorial to them. I know where their ashes are scattered, but how will future generations? Something for me to ponder on…

Gravestone are not silent, are they?

Hi Wendy, glad you liked them – I don’t have many old Colgate photos but I will try and put some more into my stories.

I think we’re very distant cousins, Wendy, my mother-in-law was Martin junior’s cousin… goodness knows how many removes that is! I have written some other Colgate stories, about how the family moved from Kent to Bletchingley and then spread out again – in this case your family to Australia and ours to the west country via Lancashire!
